Just like humans, dogs need vegetables too! Although some people are hesitant to feed veggies to their dogs, they have so many benefits when fed correctly. While there are some vegetables that aren’t safe for your dog to eat, there are a lot of good options! Fruits and veggies should be 10% of your dog’s diet.
There is a long list of vegetables you can feed to your pup. This list includes: asparagus, bell peppers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, garlic, green beans, lettuce, mushrooms, pumpkin, squash, and zucchini. With so many vegetables on that list, you have an endless supply of options to give your dog! Vegetables have prebiotic fiber in them, which means they’ll feed the good bacteria in your pup’s gut. To give your dog these veggies, you can either lightly steam or mulch them.
Just like there is a sizable list of good veggies for your pup, there’s also a long list of vegetables that aren’t safe. Vegetables you should stay away from include: corn, beans, onions, peas, and potatoes.
When feeding your pup their veggies, you should start slow. You don’t want to rush all-in on a new food, so you should take it easy and see how your dog likes it. Just like any new food, it is important to start in moderation to make sure your dog’s body wants the vegetables. Each dog is different, so some research can also help before introducing any new veggies. Like other advice given, buying organic is always best in order to avoid pesticides.
